When to Service Your Air Conditioner

Posted by

Maintenance is a reality of owning an air conditioning system. If you want your system to work at its best, then you have to take care of it. Consider a recent article for the Owasso Reporter titled “Expert Advice: ‘How often should I have my heating and air conditioning system serviced?’

The author of the article writes, “In my experience, there is no short answer to that question. The short list of variables that come into play might be things such as: Do I have animals in the house or in the yard? Do I have cottonwood trees in my neighborhood? Is my dryer vent near my air conditioner? Do I live on a gravel road? No two homes are really the same when it comes to maintaining a system, but here are a few tips that you can follow to ensure that your system performs well this summer. First, I advise my customers to check their filters every 30 days. Some of you may have a thermostat that tells you to change your filter in a set amount of time. Both are good places to start. However, I’ve seen a lot of people throw away perfectly clean filters, and I’ve seen a lot of filters that have well outlived their lifespan. So make it a point to put it on your schedule to just check your filters on the first day of the month. If they need to be replaced, then replace them. Second, check your AC regularly during the cooling season. It should be clear of dirt, grass clippings, leaves and any other debris that may accumulate on the coils. Do not mow in the area near your system while it’s running; the dirt and grass in the air get be pulled into the coils. Additionally, be sure when checking your AC to look at the side against the wall of the house (back side). Many times the front will appear clean, while the back is clogged with debris.”

Yes, it is slightly more than the typically wall or window air conditioner, but the minor additional cost is easily and quickly recouped in energy savings and home security.
