Is Attic Insulation the Missing Piece in Your Quest for Energy Efficiency?

Posted by

attic insulationIf you’ve worked to make your home as energy efficient as possible, you’ve likely already looked at energy efficient heating and cooling options, you’ve likely considered solar power, and you might have made a series of other strides. However, at AC-World we find that a lot of our customers don’t look at one thing that could do a lot of good: Their attic.

Most attics have minimal insulation. We understand why – after all, if you don’t use your attic then it may seem like you don’t need to insulate it. The reality though is that you can lose a ton of heat in the winter through your attic, and you can be trapping hot air in during hot summer months. Depending on where you live and what type of home you own, there are a number of insulation options.

Your main insulation options

Fiberglass is a top insulation option and it’s available in either pre-cut batts or blankets. You can choose from a wide range of widths and thicknesses, depending on the spacing of your studs or joists. Remember that if you end up compression fiberglass, you’ll be lowering its R-value.

Another popular option is loose-fill insulation. It can also be made of fiberglass, but can also be made with materials like rook wool or cellulose. In this option, a machine is filled with small pieces of whatever material you’re using and is then blown over the entire area you’re insulating. When the material goes through the hose, it binds together and creates a thick layer of insulation.

The next option is spray foam. It’s one of the most recently created options and though it’s usually costlier than other options, it does a great job of making a home very energy efficient. It’s made with polyurethane spray foam that’s sprayed all over the ceiling of your attic. When it dries, the foam expands and forms a layer of insulation that’s completely gapless.

Insulating your attic is just part of the process

Of course, at AC-World we want to encourage everyone to think about becoming energy efficient not as a single thing you do but a series of actions you take. We offer a great way to lower your utility bills and improve the energy efficiency of your heating and cooling system. Reach out to us to learn more about the options we offer.
