Installing AC into Horizontal Windows

Windows that slide horizontally are an idea choice for many locations, especially in spaces that simply can’t accommodate casement or awning windows. One challenge presented by horizontal windows, though, is the installation of room air conditioning, which typically occurs with double-hung windows that are opened and closed vertically.

Fortunately the process of installing AC into a horizontal window space is similar to that for vertical openings.

Before purchasing a window AC unit, be sure to measure the window opening so that you confine your buying choices to units that will fit the space. Make sure that there is a three-pronged outlet within reach of the window. Extension cords sometimes do not deliver enough power to the unit.

Inspect the window sill to make sure it is strong enough to support the unit, making any necessary repairs.

Apply weather stripping to the window sill in the same width as the sill. Then, attach the support bracket to the sill; the top of the bracket should tilt back somewhat, which allows rain to run off as needed rather than pooling on the unit or, worse, leaking into your home. Attach the support bracket to your home’s exterior.

Prep the AC unit for installation, as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Attach any included air conditioner guides. Cut weather stripping the same length as the guides and attach it to the rear portion of the side guides.

Measure the difference between the height of your unit and the window opening so that you can cover the extra open space with the included plastic curtain. Attach the curtain frame to the unit and slide the AC unit into the window opening so that it rests against the support bracket and is flush to the side window jamb. Even out the spacing of the unit in the opening and then attach the bracket to the unit. Then, attach the bottom of the unit to the window track.

Install an L bracket to prevent anyone from opening the window from the outside.
