Making Sure Extreme Heat is No Match for Your Air Conditioner

Summers are seemingly getting warmer and warmer. This summer is no different. The difference between having a quality air conditioning system and not having one could be the difference between being able to function and living in misery. Scorching hot weather also presents the problem of stopping your air conditioner from running correctly. WBAL TV offers some advice on how to avoid this problem in a recent article titled “Experts offer tips to keep air conditioning running.”

Lowell Melser of WBAL TV writes, “He says homeowners can start with washing the outside unit once a year. Washing away soot, dirt, dog hair and grass helps the unit run more efficiently, and by doing so, you could see instant results. Also, make sure you are changing your air filter in your furnace every month. A clogged filter puts strain on the system. Most important, test your units when warm weather first starts. That way, if your unit is broken, you can beat the busy maintenance season. ‘Start them up early, maybe the third week in May, make sure they're working properly, blowing cold air and let them run for a day,’ Allen said. Then there's the question of who to call. Allen says, above all, pick a reputable company that you can trust. ‘There's a lot of one-truck cellphone companies out there, and unfortunately, those are the guys you kind of have to look out for,’ Allen said.”

FOX Carolina also takes a look at keeping air conditioners running during the summer in a recent article titled “How to keep your air conditioner working through extreme heat.” Michal Higdon of FOX Carolina writes, “However, one air technician says these systems are not designed to handle temperatures that reach over 100 degrees. In fact, there's really nothing the unit can do once the temperature reaches a certain point in your home. ‘Once the temperature starts breaking 80-82 degrees inside the house, turning the temperature down won't do anything,’ Comfort Services senior technician Matthew Tucker said. ‘If it can't achieve the set temperature that you wanted in the first place, it's probably broken or it may be maxed out.’ With that in mind, here are a few tips to make sure you're (sic) AC doesn't have to work so hard. Make sure your home is insulated properly. Be sure to seal your windows and any cracks in your house so there isn't any air coming from outside. Don't forget to clean the coils in your unit a couple of times a year to help your air conditioning unit run at peak efficiency and tolerate these temperatures.”
