Examining a Study on School Air Conditioning

Study on school air conditioningStudying is much more productive in a comfortable environment for students. When it’s too hot, it can be distracting. For some schools, that means adopting portable air conditioning systems. Consider a recent article for the Hartford Courant titled “School Air Conditioning Study Approved.”

Steve Smith of the Hartford Courant writes, “The Glastonbury Town Council approved $50,000 for a feasibility study of air conditioning needs in several of the town's schools. Twenty-seven members of the community spoke at the public hearing on Jan. 12, including several teachers and administrators, as well as one student from Hopewell Elementary School, who said she enjoys learning, but finds it hard to focus and learn. ‘You heat the building in winter time, to keep us comfortable. Doesn't it make sense to also keep it cool enough in the summer?,’ the student said. Hopewell is one of five elementary schools in town without air conditioning, along with the sixth-grade school, Gideon Welles. Sarah Blake, a mother of three students in three different schools, said the issue has affected her children. Blake, along with many speakers, spoke about the effects of high temperatures on learning. ‘During excessive heat, the brain is constantly reminding the body to do something about that condition – cool yourself down,’ Blake said. ‘Because of the constant interruptions, a student's ability to remain focused, their memory, ability, and alertness are severely impacted. Teachers and school staff often experience the same effects.’ Kathleen Murphy, the principal of Hopewell Elementary School, recalled the beginning of the school year, when Glastonbury experienced a heat wave, and said the temperatures were higher than 85 degrees in classrooms for several days in late August and early September. ‘One of my teachers was sent home sick because she was throwing up,’ Murphy said. ‘Students and staff complained of headaches. The heat makes it difficult for teachers to work effectively with their students, and the students are too hot to be engaged.’”

When it comes to portable air conditioners, we’ve got you covered at AC World. Our ductless mini split air conditioner is a cost effective alternative to central air conditioning. Yes, it is slightly more than the typically wall or window air conditioner, but the minor additional cost is easily and quickly recouped in energy savings and home security. For example, since the compressor sits on the outside, the ductless mini split air conditioner is very quiet and efficient. Furthermore, they avoid the energy losses associated with the ductwork of central forced air systems.
