Ductless Air Conditioning FAQs

Ductless Air Conditioning

Going with a Ductless Split AC System makes sense in a variety of situations. Older homes that have for decades been heated via a radiator system, for example, would be difficult to retrofit when wanting to add air conditioning. Unless you’d prefer to add ducts in the corners of (already small) rooms and then build a drywall box around them, further reducing available space.

Some frequently asked questions and answers about ductless heating and air conditioning systems:

Q: Do you need to do a lot of drilling and cutting?

A: No. Ease of installation is one of the main reasons to buy and use a ductless system. Many systems take only a day or so to install. And because there is no need for ductwork, you don’t need to be concerned about paying for remodeling expenses. The units mount unobtrusively within most spaces, with refrigerant and power lines connecting it through a small wall opening to the unit that’s outside the house.

Q: Do the filters need to be changed fairly frequently?

A: That depends on how frequently your system is used and how long it runs per use. Like many appliances, your ductless system will operate much better if it receives regular maintenance. This also reduces energy costs because the unit is running at optimal efficiency. Many homeowners prefer to have the filter replaced at the system’s regularly scheduled maintenance checkup.

Q: Why are ductless systems particularly energy efficient?

A: These systems use inverter driven compressors which can get up to speed in a very short time, helping to provide the needed energy quickly. By working in conjunction with system sensors and controls, the inverter compressor can then adjust its speed to maintain the temperature level that best suits you. As a result, the system operates with only as much energy as is needed at any given time and does not waste power when it senses partial-load conditions, which are present a vast majority of the time.
