Boost Your Air Conditioning Efficiency

Boost Your Air Conditioning EfficiencyThe hot summer months are upon us and for most people in the U.S. now is the time to get those air conditioners on and running. Many people assume that keeping their homes and offices cool means enormous electric bills, but the reality is that there are many ways to make sure you’re running your air conditioning as efficiently as possible – thereby keeping your energy costs in check.

One of the simplest options is to set your thermostat to 78 when you’re home and 85 when you’re not. If you have an air conditioner that runs efficiently this should be sufficiently cool for most homes. While it may initially feel warmer than you’d like, keeping it in this range is the best way to keep energy costs down.

Fans can also play a part in cooling your home. Invest in ceiling fans in the rooms you use the most, or just set up room fans to help circulate the air. Together with your air conditioner they can make it cool and comfortable in your home or office.

At night, open up your windows and turn the air off. If your home has already been cooled for the day, it will retain much of the cool air and the nighttime temps can keep it comfy. For the daytime, consider installing room darkening window coverings. While you may love the look of lots of sunshine, remember that it’s heating up your home by the minute.

One of the obstacles people run into when trying to keep their AC usage lower is simply forgetting to change the temp. If this is your situation, consider installing a programmable thermostat that can be set and forgotten about. For example, you could set it to change to one temperature while you’re at work and then a different one at the time you generally come home.

In order for your unit to work at top capacity, it must be in good shape. This requires regular air conditioning check-ups and maintenance. You should also replace your air filters every three months on average, though it will depend on the quality of filters you choose. Take the time to vacuum around the registers regularly to keep dirt and debris away.
