5 Ways to Reduce Utility Bills by Saving on Water Heating

Posted by

water One of the many reasons that people turn to AC-World for new ductless air conditioning units is because they want to save money on their monthly utility bills. While we’re always happy to show you how we can help you reduce your heating and cooling costs, we also want to encourage our clients to reduce utility costs in other ways. Here are five ways you could lower your water heating costs.

1. Lower your water temperature by just a few degrees

If you lower your water heater temperature just a few degrees, to 120 degrees you could see a serious decrease in your bills. For example, every time the water temperature is lowered by ten degrees, you could save as much as 5% on the cost of heating your water.

2. Stick to the cold cycle on your washing machine

Of course there will be times that you’ll need to use hot water to wash your clothes but be sure that your daily clothing, that doesn’t have serious stains or soiling, is being washed in cold water. For those cycles that do require hot water, use cold water for rinsing. Remember that rinsing in hot or warm water doesn’t get clothing any cleaner.

3. Take every water leak seriously

If you have a single faucet that leaks a single drip every second, you could be wasting as much as 9 gallons of water per day – which comes out to more than 3,100 gallons of wasted water a year. If you have several leaks then these numbers can really add up.

4. Get newer appliances

It costs money to upgrade to newer appliances but it can save you big. Just like it requires an initial investment to get a ductless air conditioning system but it can have a big payoff, replacing your washer, water heater, or dishwasher with Energy Star equipment can save you as much as 31% on energy every year.

5. Keep your showers to a minimum

The simplest way to lower your water heating costs is to not spend as much time in the shower. You can also turn the water off while you’re shampooing, conditioning, or shaving. Doing this every time you shower can reduce your water usage and if you have several people living in your home, this can really add up.
