5 Chores to Do Today to Prepare for the Cold Months Ahead

Posted by

winter home As people in many regions of the U.S. prepare for the coldest months of the year, AC World is here to remind you of five simple chores you can do to get ready.

1. Make sure your windows are insulated

If you’ve bought new windows within the last five years or so then there’s a good chance they’re very good at keeping the cold outside and preventing heat from escaping. However, older windows should be covered with curtains, insulation film, or something else that will help keep heat in your home. You should also check along the corners to see if there are drafts that need to be caulked and filled.

2. Turn the switch on your ceiling fans

If you use ceiling fans, make sure you switch the direction so they blow downward. You don’t want them going full speed like you do in the summer, but blowing downward on the lowest setting will move the heat that rises up down to heat your room.

3. Check your carbon monoxide detector

Your carbon monoxide detector should be checked four times a year, so AC-World suggests you do so every time the seasons change. Most of these detectors are good for about seven years but be sure to check the date that’s on your detector to see if it needs to be replaced.

4. Check the batteries in your smoke alarms

Likewise, it’s a good idea to check the batteries in your smoke alarms seasonally. Some people recommend replacing the batteries every six months. This will waste batteries somewhat, but it will prevent that annoying chirping sound that happens when they run out of batteries. At a minimum, you should walk around and press each smoke alarm’s “test” button to see if the batteries are still good.

5. Consider upgrading your heating system

If you’re dreading heating your home this winter then you may want to consider a ductless mini split system . These systems can come with significantly lower utility bills and they can help you keep each area of your home at the temperature you want. Are you tired of having one room that’s very drafty while other rooms are so hot that you’re uncomfortable in them? A ductless multi-zone mini split heating system may be just what you’re looking for. AC-World is here to help you find the right heating system for your particular home.
